A Simple Switch to Decrease Your Risk of Infertility & Breast Cancer
The world of non-toxic living can feel overwhelming. Some days it seems the only solution to escape the mass exposure to chemicals and toxins is to hole up in a cabin in the woods eating squirrel, brushing your teeth with dirt and never using soap again... I'm kidding.
Okay, but seriously. When was the last time you looked at the ingredient list on the back of your favorite moisturizer? Or that cream you're putting on your face every single night? Or the lotion you're slathering all over your sweet little baby after baths? Most of us aren't thinking twice. But what if the ingredients inside those products are quietly working against you — and your family?
The sad but pressing truth is: thousands of unregulated chemicals are used in skincare and baby products and sold across retail shelves everywhere. And so, I challenge you to take a further look. If ingredients like this are found in your skincare... THINK TWICE.
1. Parabens
Parabens mimic the body's natural estrogen, causing it to bind to estrogen receptors. In women and young girls, this synthetic version of estrogen can present as an early onset of puberty, fertility issues, increased risk for breast cancer, and fetal development risks in pregnancy. For men, this presents largely as having a negative impact on sperm health, with a study of 800 men showing that higher levels of parabens in urine were associated with decreased levels of sperm concentration, motility, and count.
What to look for: methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben
2. Phthalates and Synthetic Fragrance
Good grief... Where to even begin here? These chemicals are linked with a laundry list of health disorders - starting with allergies and asthma and ending with cardiovascular problems, obesity, and thyroid disorders.
Operating in a similar manner as parabens, phthalates and synthetic fragrances can mimic estrogen. This unnatural binding to estrogen receptors leads to the problems we've already discussed above. These chemicals also mimic androgens. While playing a role in sexual and reproductive health, the disruption and alteration of androgens can also greatly affect metabolic health - the key factor when analyzing how these chemicals can cause obesity, hypertension, insulin sensitivity, heart disease, and more.
What to look for: fragrance (even "natural fragrance"), parfum, anything ending in -phthalates
What You Can Do
If you're using a product with an ingredient that looks anything like what I've listed above, get rid of it. If you're using a product like this on your babies, toddlers, or buying them for your teenage son or daughter - stop. There are many moisturizers on the market now that are labeled "paraben-free", "phthalate-free" and "fragrance-free". Search for these.
And if you really want to go all-in and avoid the thousands of other chemicals and unfamiliar ingredients on the back of skincare products, visit our site and check out our Whipped Baby Tallow - one of the most nutrient-rich, skin-loving moisturizers on the market crafted with 100% grass fed and finished suet.
